An electrocardiogram is a graphic representation of the electrical activity of the heart and it has long been used to diagnose the workings of the human heart.  The strong electrical impulses generated by the heart can be measured at the surface of the skin as far away as the hands and feet.   A great amount of information can be gained from this non-invasive test about heart rate, heart size, rhythmicity, orientation of the heart within the chest cavity, electrical conduction problems, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system activity, coronary artery disease and heart muscle damage.
